GENERAL HEALTH

SOME TIPS AND TRICKS

By Kate Minogue

It would be wise to assume that your chicken and eggs have been contaminated with Salmonella.  Just before using eggs, scald them for five seconds in boiling water to clean the shells.  Be very careful when preparing raw chicken.  Make sure all the utensils and surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and that the chicken itself is well cooked.

Teach your children to wash their hands as a routine, after playing outside.  Be aware that bird and lizard droppings can contain Salmonella.

It is also a good idea to wash your cans of drink before opening them as there is a risk of disease from rat’s urine.

Train your children to use sunscreen, particularly in the summer months, and to drink plenty of water.  Sunscreen is now obtainable in Tripoli, however it is not widely available.
